Last week I wrote about how agriculture needs to draw a line in the sand and stand up against certain forces bent on its destruction.  I got a few e-mails in support of that position, most thanking me for standing up for agriculture. But folks, I am not the one who needs to stand up — you are.  In my opinion, the response of many large farm organizations to the attacks from HSUS and others has been a bit on the timid side. We have relied on facts, science, and engaging in “dialogues” on food and agriculture issues.  Meanwhile, those on the other side have resorted to lawsuits, intimidation, voter referendums, misleading television commercials, and even lobbying and legislation.  There has emerged, however, an organization that is taking a much more aggressive and effective strategy when dealing with anti-agriculture activist groups.

Since the inception of the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Champions Tour, the Super Farm Tractor title has been claimed by a competitor from the state of Wisconsin.  The Badger State has been known for their potent contingent of tractors that represent the Cheesehead fans across the state.  The streak of titles ranged six consecutive years, but it came to a screeching halt in 2012.  Enter Clay Darnell to the mix, a youngster from the Bluegrass state of Kentucky, who was primed to make a run at bringing the coveted title home to the family shop in Cynthiana.  Darnell under the tutelage of his father had a career year on the circuit, where he collected his first ever Champions Tour event win in Fairfield, Illinois.  "Winning at Fairfield was incredible, but the win ended up doing some engine damage and I was worried we were done," stated Clay.

Midnight

The small rural central Illinois community of Philo is known for a few things:  its rich farm ground, die hard allegiance to the local University of Illinois' Fighting Illini, and the Philo Tavern's magnificent plate lunches and cold draft beers.  Just off the square in Philo one will find the childhood home of John Mumma, the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Champions Tour title winner in the Optima Batteries Super Modified Two Wheel Drive Truck class.
